Farmers can profit from climate change
16 Oct 2007

According to a report by the CSIRO Australian farmers could earn up to $1.3 billion per year by harvesting energy from clean, renewable sources and farming carbon. The report, commissioned by the Agriculture Alliance on Climate Change, recommended that a clean renewable energy target of 25 per cent should be in place by 2020 which would, along with higher carbon prices, support renewable energy development in the near-term. The report also said that the level of biodiversity conservation on private land should be lifted from the current 6 per cent to 14 per cent. "Implementing an ambitious, voluntary stewardship scheme could more than double the area of actively conserved native vegetation through total outlays of $740 million to $1360 million per year, some of which might be funded through the carbon value of the native vegetation protected."
