Farm sales to double in next decade
29 Oct 2007

Research from Charles Sturt University predicts that the sale of farms in Australia's eastern states will double over the next 10 years. The main contributor to the increased turnover will be baby boomer farmers deciding to sell to consolidators or for residential sub-division but other factors are structural adjustment, the drought and demand for rural property. The report says that new buyers are not likely to be tree-changers, but absentee landowners. The trend is illustrated in Corangamite near Geelong where absentee owners represent around 20 per cent of those who have held land for more than a decade, but the proportion if 40 per cent for those who have held land for less than 10 years.
