Grants not enough to entice farmers off land
5 Nov 2007

While over 300 farmers have made enquiries only 14 have lodged applications for the federal government's $150,000 exit grants. Agriculture minister Peter McGauran said that it was understandable that there had not been a rush to take up the offer. "Any decision to leave the land is a life-changing one. Many who have battled through this long drought will put off a decision until normal conditions return," he said. The grant is often not enough to compensate for selling what can be million dollar properties while the farm property market is slow. To be eligible for the grants farmers must have net assets minus debt of less than $350,000.
