Queensland farmers rewarded for land management
4 Dec 2007

Queensland farmers have the opportunity to extend their 30 year land leases to 50 years under a deal announced by the state's government yesterday. If land is kept in an environmentally "good" condition farmers will be given a 40 year lease, or if the land is considered to be conserved at a "high value" a lease can be signed for 50 years. When announcing the deal state premier Anna Bligh said that she hoped the new arrangements would encourage owners to undertake environmentally sustainable land use. However landholders have been assured that they will not face the sorts of penalties that can be applied under the Vegetation Management Act if they do not meet targets.
