Farmers resist mining moves 14 Dec 2007
Mining giant BHP Billiton has a fight on its hands as farmers in northern NSW try to stop prospectors digging for coal on freehold land. BHP may only be drilling test holes at Caroona, near Gunnedah, but farmers say that this risks contaminating the ground water that they rely on to water their crops. An arbitration hearing will be conducted today but all farmers have said that they will not attend. Permits were given to BHP by the state government to conduct exploration in the area and land owners have little say under the Mining Act of 1992.
