Farmers say no to Sugarloaf
20 Feb 2008

Victorian farmers are resisting the planned Sugarloaf Pipeline that would link the Murray River to Melbourne's Sugarloaf Reservoir, saying that it will transfer their water for use by metropolitan Melbourne. Farmers are seeking legal advice to determine whether they can prevent the state government from accessing their land through a compulsory easement. The current plans require a 100 metre corridor initially would affect around 170 properties, but this is expected to be narrowed to 30 metres during construction and 15 metres after completion. A specialist lawyer is also being hired to appeal against the plans using similar strategies to those used by opponents of plans to dredge the bay and build a desalination plant.
