Leasing to keep the farm
25 Feb 2008

Leasing the farm is becoming a popular choice as it gives farmers the opportunity to keep working land they have developed over many years. South Australian state director at Colliers International, Phil Schell, says that in mid and lower South Australia leasing has doubled over the past three years. Farmers can receive a fixed return, plus capital gains, while retaining ownership of expensive heavy machinery so that they can contract themselves out. A senior accountant at RSM Bird Cameron, Stewart Heine, has advised some operators to lease as higher interest rates can make buying a farm less attractive.
