Farmers in north-west remain dry 17 Mar 2008
Farmers in the west of Queensland and most of the Northern Territory have missed out on the flooding rains along the east of the country, forcing many to sell their cattle early. Sam Daniels from the Brodie & Co stock company said that people in the east need to be reminded that not everywhere got rain. "Station owners out here have started selling their cattle three or four months ahead of schedule," he said. Some reports have estimated that as many as 80,000 cattle have left the region since the middle of February. Mt Isa in Queensland only received a fifth of its usual rainfall last month and has had no rain yet this month.
