Speck's spot-on performance at Qld sheepdog trials 13 Oct 2003
John Wightman and his border collie Toolangie Speck won the state title at the Queensland Sheep Dog Trial at Clifton on the Darling Downs yesterday. There was a tie for second place between Nigel Sharpe of Tenterfield with his dog Bonpost Chance and Snow Potter of Oakey with his dog Potter Flash. In a hotly-contested final round, two dogs and their handlers were tied for first until Speck took the field as the last of more than 250 dogs in the four-day event, then claimed his first title.
Mr Wightman, of Merriwa in NSW, entered six dogs in novice, improver and open divisions, and won several trophies in his first trial in Queensland. He said one dog does the work of two or three men on a station. Training the dogs relies on using the dog's natural instincts as a pack hunter to herd animals towards their "pack leader" - the handler, he said.
