Equestrians need help too
10 Oct 2007

The Equestrian Federation of Australia has said that its members have been largely overlooked in favour of the racing industry for government assistance in dealing with the equine influenza outbreak. The EFA has asked for a $20 million support package to help over 14,000 equestrian businesses with 30,000 staff. The organisation's president, Geoff Sinclair, said that three Olympic equestrian sports and Paralympic competitions are now at risk and that Australia's standing as a leading equestrian nation was under threat. "Over 30,000 horses are held up in infected areas [in NSW and Queensland] and this number grows daily. Without assistance, 250,000 horses and riders could disappear from the sport."
