Will the Greens close down New Zealand? 1 Nov 2001
The New Zealand Government is considering a ban on genetically modified food. The introduction of such a policy would have adverse effects on agricultural production not only in New Zealand but across Australasia.
Australia and New Zealand currently share a number of regulatory bodies and have strong economic and trade ties. A ban on certain forms of biotechnology in New Zealand would place pressure on Australian authorities to follow suit.
The New Zealand Greens and the Alliance Party have led the case for a ban on genetically modified food, but their concerns failed to sway the decision of the recent Royal Commission on the issue. The Commission found that New Zealand should "proceed carefully" and "minimise and manage" the risks. Given such a finding, it is not logical that the Government is still entertaining the idea of a blanket ban.
