Regional news services closed

Five major regional centres around the country will lose local TV news services after Southern Cross Broadcasting closed newsrooms in Canberra, Darwin, Townsville Cairns and Alice Springs. Southern Cross runs Channel 10 in Canberra, Cairns and Townsville and Channel 7 in Darwin and the Alice. The company said the cost of setting up digital TV meant costs had to be cut elsewhere but the Government has rejected the claim saying it had given funding to networks to cover the cost of conversion. Regional residents have seen local radio and TV services gradually wound back over the last decade or so as media owners consolidate their businesses by increasingly networking transmissions from larger cities. Queensland viewers over the vast area north from the Sunshine Coast will now only have one local TV news service. The Australian p1 22/11/01
