Regional TV calls for law overhaul
7 Dec 2001

Australia's three main rural television networks, WIN, Prime and Southern Cross Broadcasting, have called for an overhaul of current media ownership laws. Existing laws have successfully prevented monopolization of the industry by larger players but have also restricted smaller regional networks branching out into radio and newspaper media. WIN chief executive, Mr John Rushton, said that although current laws may be relevant in metropolitan areas they can be detrimental to services in regional Australia. The Coalition Government is seeking Labour and Democrat support for changing the laws, but both have expressed concern over the likely concentration of ownership to result. 'Rural TV backs law change', The Australian Financial Review, 07/12/01, p18.
