First GM crop approved
22 Jan 2002

Australia's Gene Technology Regulator has officially approved its first genetically modified crop trial - a double gene variety of cotton. The crop will be grown by Cotton Seed Distributors in the Emerald irrigation area of central Queensland.

The trial will test two-gene Bolguard cotton and a Bolguard Roundup-Ready cross, which both contain an in-built resistance to weeds and pests. The Gene Technology Regulator will have the power to impose conditions on the way the crop is managed, as well as inspect the crop on an ad hoc basis.

'First crop approved under GMO laws', ABC Rural, 22/01/02.
