Hay performance measures now available
1 Feb 2002

The CSIRO have developed a new infrared test that measures the quality of different hays. The technology is expected to help farmers determine how much feed an animal will eat.

CSIRO believe the Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy (NIRS) technology is a world first for the fodder industry and is based on its 'shear energy' measurement. This measurement reflects the time it takes an animal to break down feed into small particle sizes that can be easily digested.
