Telstra cuts low-cost email service 7 Feb 2002
Telstra is set to get rid of the low-cost email service currently relied upon by thousands of Australians, including rural users and small businesses.
Telstra will shut down its "easymail" service on 13 March 2002. The "easymail" service is purely an email service as it does not include internet access. However, its low-cost nature (users are only charged the cost of a local call to send an email) is attractive to low-income earners and small businesses. Approximately 250,000 Australians currently rely on an "easymail" account. Telstra is urging these customers to sign up to their new $5.95 per month BigPond plan.
Telstra has notified its customers that they cannot forward their emails to another address and that their current email address cannot be transferred to another service. Many small businesses that rely on email access have raised concerns over the short notice period given by Telstra.
