Councils move to ban GM trials
14 Feb 2002

A growing number of local councils have moved to pass resolutions declaring their local areas to be GM-free zones. The councils have outlawed trials of genetically modified crops within their local council areas, concern about environmental risks and the transfer of genes between species.

However, industry has ridiculed the bans, claiming they are unenforceable due to the lack of backing from state governments. Rosalie Shire Mayor, Noel Strohfeld, has lobbied for the Queensland Department of Local Government and Planning to alter state laws to allow official GM-free zones, but to date no states have made such changes.
