Fewer payphones 15 Feb 2002
The Australian Communications Authority has found that the number of payphones in Australia has declined steadily since 1996, with only 4.16 phones now available per 1,000 people, compared with 4.49 phones seven years ago.
The ACA's annual report is critical of Telstra for failing to support public payphone services, which it says are "an essential community service". Telstra is legally required to provide reasonable access to payphones across the country.
