Plain and simple: health guide for mobile users 19 Feb 2002
A "layman's guide" to the draft national standard on mobile phone emissions will be released by the Australian Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency at the same time as the technical report.
But both the draft standard and the simple guide still leave big questions about the public's concerns, says John Lincoln of the Electromagnetic Radiation Alliance. He expressed concern that the standard won't sufficiently protect public health even though it explains exposure limits and endorses precaution by users.
Lincoln says that mobile phones are so popular that it wouldn't be possible to take them away from people, yet little effort is being directed to measures to ensure that they're safe.
Trade union representative Dan Dwyer has also expressed dissatisfaction with the draft standard. He says that the working group started off with the assumption that higher exposure levels should be adopted and then found no compelling reasons not to endorse them.
