Regional TV coverage targeted by broadcast review 20 Feb 2002
Minister for Communications, Senator Richard Alston, has warned regional media companies that they may be forced to re-open services previously closed for financial reasons. Findings from the current ABA inquiry into the adequacy of regional TV news will offer advice as to whether regulation is needed to protect such services.
Senator Alston stated in Parliament that the $260 million in funding to upgrade studios was at threat unless acceptable services levels by commercial operators were upheld, stating "it is not acceptable to simply get the money up front and then change the level of service".
The ABA is currently holding public meetings in country areas to gauge views and concerns about the adequacy of commercial television services.
