Telstra to broaden CDMA reach 8 Apr 2002
Telstra will broaden its mobile phone coverage of rural and regional Australia following the awarding of a government contract to build more than 100 base towers. 21 Victorian country towns will get access to the code-division multiple access network from the new bases, bringing the State's coverage to 98.9 per cent of the population and 70 per cent of the land mass.
The communications contract will mean that a total of 132 regional towns across Australia will get new or upgraded mobile phone services. Telstra has been under pressure from the Government and regional communities to increase services to the bush, with full privatisation of the telco dependent on reaching certain rural targets. Some regional towns with no existing mobile phone coverage will be required to make a "community contribution" to the expansion, Telstra says.
