Overseas farmers embrace GM crops
23 Apr 2002

Estimates from the US Department of Agriculture have shown that farmers in the United States and Canada are embracing genetically modified soybeans and canola. They now believe that plantings of GM soybeans alone have risen by 3 million acres to 54 million acres. This accounts for three quarters of the entire US soy crop.

In Canada, it is expected that GM Canola crops will consist of up to 70% of total canola grown due to its ability to save on input costs like herbicides and fuel.

Meanwhile, Ag chemical lobby group, Avcare, has released a discussion paper claiming that a push to create GM Free zones infringes on the rights of Australian farmers.
