Fruit and Vege market embraces technology 8 May 2002
Melbourne's fruit and vegetable market has adopted the latest technologies in a bid to improve efficiencies, with laptop computers and the Internet becoming commonplace.
An industry consortium at the markets has launched "Fresh Chain" a system which uses the Internet to process multiple offers with a single phone call. It is expected that it will save many growers and traders up to 80 per cent on their communications and administration costs.
They also plan to build in short message service facility that would allow a grower to find a buyer before going to the expense of harvesting.
"Fresh Chain" will operate nationally, and is open to any member of the industry for a registration fee of $250 and a monthly subscription of $20 plus 0.5 per cent of each transaction made on the system. The registration fee will be waived until June 30.
The consortium stated that several hundred thousand dollars worth of business has already been transacted through the system.
