Telstra aims to engage the bush with T3 giveaways 20 May 2002
Regional Australia stands to gain an improved communication services following moves by Telstra Corp to win support from farmer groups and the Federal Parliament for 100% privatisation.
It is recognised that communications services to rural and regional areas have to improve before the Government can proceed with the sale of its remaining 50.1 per cent stake. Therefore Telstra plans to offer services to regional communities such as high-speed digital satellite communications services, cheaper satellite mobile phone charges and long-range cordless phones for farmers. Subsidies of up to $1,000 to buy satellite mobile phone handsets will also be available.
The new program will be launched at the National Farmers Federation annual conference in the West Australian town of Carnarvon.
Last week's Budget reaffirmed the Government's intention to book proceeds, of $11.7 billion, from the next tranche of Telstra in 2003-04.
