WA research group fears GM-free zoning
22 May 2002

President of the Council of Grain Grower Organisations, Bruce Piper, says that he has been informed that the Western Australian Primary Industry Minister, Kim Chance, is going to announce that WA is a “GM-free Zone” soon. Mr Piper is very worried and says that this would be a disastrous decision for farmers in the State. He said that the recent US farm bill has “tipped the playing field probably 60 degrees” and then “we get this whammy on top”. He says that such a decision would mean that Western Australian growers will become very uncompetitive in the world market. International experts will not visit and talk, and bright people in universities will go elsewhere to work in their chosen fields, he said, because there will be no future in WA.
