Telstra rejects improved service-sale link 23 May 2002
Telstra announced improved services for country Australia yesterday but rejected claims that this was a ploy to gain support for full privatisation. The MD of Telstra Countrywide, Doug Campbell, said that the announcements of a new deal for cheaper satellite access, better Internet services and long-range cordless phones for on-farm use are just part of ongoing work to improve services for all of its customers. Mr Campbell said that Telstra Countrywide will continue to strive for improvements and it's something that "will never end”.
However the president of the National Farmers' Federation, Ian Donges, said that he won't support the full privatisation of Telstra until telecommunications in rural and regional Australia are of the same standard as those in the major cities.
Meanwhile, the Federal Minister for Finance, Senator Nick Minchin, told the NFF conference last night that he would like to see some of the proceeds from any further sale of Telstra spent on fighting salinity.
