Telstra promises upgrade to rural services 31 Jul 2002
Telstra's board was in Darwin yesterday, launching a new telecommunications infrastructure for the Northern Territory. Speaking at the launch, CEO Dr Ziggy Switkowski made a commitment to continue working towards improved rural services. He claimed that there had already been a considerable improvement in the time taken to install new connections and repair faults. The first regulators' report in 1998 showed that Telstra was achieving time service levels of only 41 per cent of legislated time-frames, Dr Switkowski admitted, but by the March 2002 quarter Telstra was achieving Internet service levels of between 95 and 98 per cent.
Dr Switkowski said that Telstra's Country Wide division was established two years ago to drive telecommunications services in rural and regional regions, and has already delivered initiatives such as improved Internet accessibility, untimed calls for remote areas and wider CDMA mobile phone coverage.
Telstra is committed to keeping rural and regional Australia up-to-date with new technology, Dr Switkowski stated, as it's the right strategy for the nation's growth.
