ABC rural program cuts 'thoughtless': Anderson
5 Sep 2003

The Deputy Prime Minister, John Anderson, says the ABC is being "thoughtless" in cutting local regional and rural radio news broadcasts with nationally-produced programs. He said the local news bulletins are relied on heavily by country listeners and the ABC's decision appears to have been made without much thought.

Mr Anderson asked the ABC to explain why the rural and regional radio services had been targeted for cutbacks.

The ABC has had to make $26 million of budget cuts this year and has axed some key programs. The broadcaster criticised the Federal Government for the level of funding it has received this year.

The Daily Telegraph, 5/9/03, page 9.
