Farm inventions win awards 9 Sep 2003
Russell Meaton, a principal of the Misty Hills superfine Merino stud in Kojonup, Western Australia, says he'd had enough of for ever putting a stock crate on his ute and then having to remove it the next day so he could use the load space. So he came up with the idea of a collapsible stock crate to go on the backs of utes.
Mr Meaton's invention has earned him the right to go on and represent Western Australia in the Orange Field Days national inventor competition, to be held this year.
Another inventor, Larry Alford, made a clean sweep of the field day awards this year with his four-way ratchet. It won the Category A section of the "Countryman" and Lord and Co Farm Innovation Awards. Mr Alford won the inventors section at Wagin Woolorama earlier this year and said it had really struck a chord with farmers. Using a ratchet in confined areas makes it necessary to be able to provide drive by twisting the handle, as well as using it in a traditional way, Mr Alford said.
