Cows on spy-cam
1 Oct 2003

Stuart Burns and his wife Pauline have introduced "cow reality television" to their Gainsborough dairy farm in Victoria. With the help of four "cow-cams", they can monitor their cows calving, and their calves, using the TV remote control from the comfort of their lounge or bedroom.

The Burns's 450-cow dairy farm near Warragul is a test site for surveillance equipment which has been developed for commercial and domestic use. Four infra-red cameras and two microphones monitor the Burns's cows calving on the calving pad, as well as the adjacent calf-rearing shed.

Mr Burns said: This doesn't replace the need to physically check what is going on, but it certainly beats getting out of bed in the middle of the night if you don't have to.
