Rural phone services must match city: NFF
10 Oct 2003

The National Farmers' Federation has reiterated its policy stance by stating that it won't consider supporting the full privatisation of Telstra until rural telecommunications services are on a par with those in metropolitan areas. The NFF repeated its commitment to a Senate inquiry which is examining the Telstra sale Bill.

Telecommunications policy manager Mark Needham said the NFF can see a continuing improvement in country areas but equivalent service levels throughout Australia must be achieved before the organisation will consider a full Telstra sale.

Mr Needham said the current Bill does not deal adequately with "future-proofing" or ongoing quality of service, and that there needs to be a separate vehicle for this as it's a service level issue.

Queensland Country Life, 9/10/03.
