GM crops banned from WA
23 Mar 2004

The Western Australian Government yesterday announced that no genetically modified food crops will be grown in the state until at least 2006. However, the declaration still allows for the state Agriculture Department to grant exemptions on further trials and commercial releases of new GM crop varieties if developers can establish their case.

The WA Farmers' Federation said the order is in line with its own cautious approach while uncertainties remain about market acceptance and the ability to keep GM crops separate. But supporters of GM technology were critical, with Western Graingrowers saying that WA farmers rely on productivity improvement to remain competitive.

The West Australian, 23/3/04.
