Farmers, Monsanto slam WA GM ban
24 Mar 2004

Farmers and Monsanto have criticised the Western Australian Government's decision to ban genetically modified crops. WA Premier Geoff Gallop had claimed that international consumer reaction to GM crops may be negative. But Monsanto said the decision was puzzling and disappointing, as WA has been involved in trialling GM cotton. In addition, research viewed by the WA Government showed that 99.7 per cent of WA's canola customers don't distinguish between GM and non-GM.

The Grains Council of Australia was also critical of the ban, given that federal regulators have rigorously investigated health and environmental concerns about GM crops and then approved them.

A spokesman for the NSW Agriculture Minister said it was impractical to make NSW GM-free. Victoria is yet to decide whether to lift its moratorium on GM crops.

Australian Financial Review, 24/3/04.
