Warning on cattle pour-on 26 Mar 2004
A livestock manager for HW Greenham and Sons at Tongala has warned about the risk to Australian beef markets of a new pour-on cattle treatment, Genesis Ultra Pour-on. The meat exporter is concerned about the product's long withholding period. It combines liver fluke control with that of other parasites and is registered only for beef cattle. But its withholding period for export cattle is 140 days, compared with 49 days for domestic market cattle. This means export cattle can't be slaughtered for five months after the pour-on treatment.
Graham Preddie said Genesis Ultra Pour-On is not included on the list of withholding periods for animal medicines accompanying national vendor declaration forms. Two other products with similar names but shorter withholding periods are listed.
But the manufacturer, Ancare Australia, said there should be no problems as long as farmers read and follow the instructions carefully, as they should for any chemical.
