Dairy co-op on outer as farmers vent GM fury 31 Mar 2004
The Victorian Government's decision to extend the ban on genetically modified crops for an additional four years has sparked strong criticism from farmers, grain groups and biotechnology companies. The Government extended the moratorium on growing GM canola and co-existence trials of the crop.
However, the Government's move has been welcomed by Victoria's largest dairy company, Murray Goulburn dairy co-operative, as well as green groups. United Dairyfarmers of Victoria branded MG's stand a "stunt".
The Victorian Farmers' Federation president Paul Weller said the decision went against all scientific advice and information. Mr Weller labelled the move "an absolutely disgraceful decision" and claimed it showed the State Government's contempt for its farming community.
The Government has also been described as hypocritical for proposing a toxic dump on agricultural land whilst at the same time pushing a "clean green" stance on GM foods.
