Export trade fear shrinks GM crop trials
2 Apr 2004

The NSW Government has ruled out a 3,000ha trial of GM canola after strong concerns were voiced by AWB Ltd. But three small research trials will go ahead, covering 420ha, to test different varieties of GM canola plants against conventional canola.

The decision has dashed the hopes of the Australian Oilseeds Association, Bayer CropScience and Monsanto, which hoped to trial the 3,000ha of GM canola this year.

NSW Agriculture Minister Ian Macdonald said the State Government had made the decision not to proceed after AWB raised concerns about risks to its export markets.

Sydney Morning Herald, 2/4/04.
