Cattle ID backlash
27 Apr 2004

A producer backlash in NSW against the National Livestock Identification System has prompted the Federal Agriculture Minister to state he has no problem if NSW bows to pressure and delays its start. The NLIS roll-out is due to start in NSW in July but Mr Truss said it could be postponed by a year. NSW would then fall back into line with Queensland, WA and the NT, where NLIS starts in July 2005.

Four producer meetings this month have demanded either that the system be scrapped or at least delayed until the beef and dairy sectors can get effective ID gear activated. But the NSW Agriculture Minister is not budging and said there is "absolutely no plan to delay the implementation" of NLIS. He acknowledged its introduction would be a significant task but said it would be staged over several years. He refuted annual NLIS costs of as much as $37 a head quoted by Australian Beef Association chairman John Carter.
