Telstra plugs rural plans 3 May 2004
Telstra will unveil plans to upgrade broadband and mobile services for regional and rural customers tomorrow. The unveiling of a range of new broadband initiatives will coincide with an announcement on the installation of ADSL technology in several telephone exchanges in Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson's northern NSW electorate of Gwydir. The announcement will be made outside a Telstra Shop in Gunnedah's main street.
Meanwhile, it has been revealed that Telstra's efforts to improve bush broadband services are being held back by the slow take-up of $107.8 million in government funding. It's believed not one Internet service provider has shown any interest, due to excessive red tape.
But another rural initiative - two-way satellite Internet service - is making progress, with about 12,000 remote users signed up to date.
