Monsanto ends bid for GM canola
13 May 2004

Monsanto has given up on pursuing genetically modified canola in Australia, blaming the array of bans and restrictions due to consumer concerns. The move is a win for opponents of GM food but farmers' groups were dismayed, arguing their productivity will fall behind other countries with access to better grain varieties.

The Pastoralists' and Graziers' Association's grains division said the WA Government had rejected a unique opportunity to share in Monsanto's expertise to develop cutting-edge technology. A Monsanto spokesman said the investment in Australia would be kept under review but there would have to be a significant change for the investment to make commercial sense.

A spokesman for Bayer said it is still undertaking research trials of GM canola in Victoria and NSW.

The West Australian, 13/5/04.
