Bananas generate electric idea 1 Jun 2004
Cash-strapped north Queensland farmers have unveiled their latest attempt to generate dollars: making electricity from discarded bananas. Up to one in three bananas is rejected by shops and supermarkets due to discolouring or spots, and 40,000 tonnes of bananas are mulched or fed to cattle every year.
So the Australian Banana Growers' Council has launched a study into the economics of burning or fermenting fruit for electricity. Enough electricity would be generated to power more than 500 homes, and the ABGC hopes the first watts will be flowing through power lines within 12 months. The University of Queensland has been commissioned to work out the most viable way to turn the bananas into kilowatts.
