Study confirms viability of chicken drug: BioDiem
13 Jul 2004

An independent study by RMIT University has confirmed the commercial viability of BioDiem's drug to replace antibiotics used on chickens for disease control and to boost growth, according to the company. A field trial of the synthetic antibiotic replacement, BDM-I, was conducted on 860 chickens. The chickens on BDM-I ate less feed to achieve the same weight gain as chickens on the antibiotic zinc bacitracin, and also had a lower mortality rate.

BioDiem said that replacing antibiotics used in poultry feed could deliver extra savings to primary producers. BDM-I produced a level of feed conversion that would equate to a saving of more than five tonnes of feed per growing cycle in a typical 50,000-bird shed, CEO Tom Williams said.

BioDiem still has to conduct more trials to test the efficacy of BDM-I against diseases. A larger commercial trial involving tens of thousands of chickens will probably be held early in 2005.
