Credit charge raises hackles 21 Jul 2004
Farmers have slammed Telstra's decision to charge them for payments by credit card. Delegates at last week's Victorian Farmers' Federation conference voted for the VFF to inform Telstra of their objection "to the charging of a fee when using a credit card to pay Telstra accounts". The charges depend on the type of credit card used and range from 0.68 to 1.68 per cent of the bill.
A Rutherglen farmer said the charge discriminates against country people who use credit cards to pay accounts by phone. Many farmers' incomes are spasmodic, he said, so a credit card helps with cash flow. Country people also have to pay an enormous amount for STD calls.
Telstra responded it is simply passing on the credit card charges that it's traditionally absorbed and said farmers have other options for paying their bills, such as BPay, the Internet and paying at post offices.
