More clothing chains join wool boycott
15 Dec 2004

Two further clothing chains, J.Crew in the US and London-based New Look, have joined US retailer Abercrombie & Fitch in their boycott of Australian-sourced wool products, following pressure from PETA. The retailers dislike the practice of “mulesing” in which farmers cut skin away from the sheep’s backside. Meanwhile researchers funded by Australian Wool Innovation hope to unravel the genetic code of the sheep blowfly, or lucilia cuprina, within two years, and lay the groundwork for an alternative mechanism to counter the harm caused by flystrike. The industry hopes to end the practice of mulesing by 2010.
