Biological shearing now a commercial prospect 12 Apr 2005
Animal health company, Merial, has finally begun to market a protein, or epidermal growth factor now known by the brand name Bioclip, that CSIRO research first showed 30 years ago would lead to "biological" shearing of sheep. An injectible form of the protein has been available since the mid 1990s. The delay has been in developing and manufacturing a cheap and effective net which could be quickly fitted over the sheep's body at the time of injection to retain the detached fleece for about one month before harvest to protect the animal from both sunburn and cold weather.
