Plastic rather than electronic tags preferred for sheep ID 29 Jun 2005
State governments and farming bodies are slowing a consensus over the national livestock identification system for sheep. The NLIS system is expected to be in place and compulsory from January 2006. The Sheepmeat Council said there was general support for visual tagging of all sheep born next calendar year. The system will include a paper trail to ensure stock can be tracked beyond the property of birth.
The current cost of the visual ear tags is about 22 to 25 cents each. A change to electronic tags does not appear to be on the horizon, despite their use in the cattle NLIS system.
