Topas 19/2 found in Victorian canola
15 Jul 2005

A consignment of Victorian canola seeds bound for Japan contains genetically modified material. A routine test by the Australian Barley Board found that 0.01 per cent of the consignment contained GM material. The Government's Gene Technology Regulator said the modification was known as Topas 19/2 – a variety that provides tolerance to the herbicide glufosinate ammonium. The GM line, developed by Bayer CropScience, trialled the variety in Australia before the national regulatory system for gene technology came into effect in 2001.
