Telstra warns of lower service standards in the bush 28 Jul 2005
Telstra said the level of the subsidy paid by the federal government to ensure basic telephone services in the bush was inadequate. Telstra said it was difficult to come up with business models for service delivery in the bush that would make a profit. Telstra said the concept of “universal service obligation”, imposed by the government on Telstra, was unsustainable. All telephone companies contribute to the cost of the current subsidy, paid to Telstra, with Telstra bearing the brunt of that subsidy. The service obligation aims to make basic telephone and pay phone services reasonably accessible.
