Feds won’t make broadband a Telstra obligation
29 Jul 2005

The communications minister, Helen Coonan, said that “I don’t think a case has been made out to roll broadband into” the universal service obligation. The USO is a minimum service level the government will subsidise Telstra to provide in the bush. Coonan said the government should not invest in telecommunications technologies in the bush for which there was no demonstrated demand.
