Telstra seeks increased subsidies for bush broadband 15 Aug 2005
The federal government is considering whether to establish a $1billion fund to subsidise the cost of investment in internet blackspots in country areas. The idea is one way in which the government may win support for the full privatisation of Telstra. Telstra, however, wants the government to pay more than half the cost of a $5 billion fund to improve telecommunication services in the bush more generally. The government’s internet plan would expand the High Bandwidth Incentive Scheme, which offers incentives of up to $3300 for each satellite service provided to premises with no ISDN, or traditional phone line, access. The customer then pays only $129 for a connection, which is less than the cost of signing up for broadband in the city.
