Feds pledge price parity for broadband
21 Sep 2005

The federal government is considering intervening in the provision of telecommunications services to regional areas to ensure there is parity between the prices paid for internet access and basic phone lines by rural and city users.

In a letter to the National Farmers Federation, the deputy prime minister Mark Vaile promised to ensure that city and country customers would pay the same price for broadband. That promise in turn persuaded the NFF to endorse the government’s sale of its majority holding in Telstra. It is not clear how the government would ensure parity of pricing.
